International students who have changed their legal name must first update their passport to reflect the name change.
Besides updating your name on your passport and I-20/DS-2019 (F-1/J-1 students only), you may also need to update your new legal name with various government agencies and institutions like the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Secretary of State, your U.S. bank, and the U.S. Postal Service.
